Uganda is well known as the home of some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species including the Lion, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopards, Rhinos, Chimpanzees and of course the most sought-after primates; the mountain gorillas. Records show that the majority of tourists visiting Uganda always include a Bwindi gorilla safari adventure to the itinerary; a chance to get up close with one of the world’s most endangered species is truly a unique wildlife experience.
A 3 days gorilla trip to Bwindi will offer you the full experience in a just a short period of time. Bwindi impenetrable forest is situated in south western corner of Uganda and getting there by road will take about 8 to 9 hours if you are traveling from Kampala city and about only 2 to 3 hours if you are traveling from Kisoro or Kabale, the closest places to the park. There will be en-route stop overs for lunch and relaxation before reaching the forest. You can board a plane from Entebbe airport and get to the park in just an hour.
Day 1 is reserved for transfer of the tourists from the airport, hotel or residence in Kampala city to the park. As earlier mentioned, the journey hours differ depending on location and means used to get there. Once in the park, check in to your already booked safari lodge room or camp base and relax, you can take a walk around as you admire the beautiful forest. Prepare for dinner and a camp fire (exclusive to a few lodges & camps).
Day 2 is the day you finally get to meet the incredible mountain gorillas in the wild. After an early morning breakfast, Prepare for transfer to the park headquarters where you will be briefed about the do’s and dont’s when tracking gorillas in Bwindi forest. You will be given packed lunch by the safari lodge or camp you are staying in- you can hire a potter if yo are carrying loads of luggage. After the briefing and final preparations, yo will start the trek escorted by two armed tour guides. The slopes are steep and most times slippery with thick bush, so be prepared for an adventure. Gorilla trekking can last up to 5 hours depending on the location of the specific gorilla family you are searching for but once in their midst, you will only be given 1 hour to take pictures (non flashy) as you observe them feed, play and interact in the wild.
Proceed to safe point away from the gorillas and have lunch before trekking to a pick-up point where drivers will be waiting to transfer you back to the safari lodge or camp. Take a shower and relax or and prepare for dinner and camp fire. You will be handed your gorilla tracking certificate showing you accomplished the trek successfully.
Day 3 is reserved for departure, wake up and have breakfast, park some and then check out of the lodge. The driver will then transfer you back to Kampala city, Entebbe airport, Kabale or Kisoro ending the tour.
