The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)- the body responsible for conserving, managing and regulating Uganda’s wildlife has officially announced the temporary suspension of hiking activities to the Margherita Peak as a precautionary measure. After a comprehensive assessment from the UWA team, crevasse formations (different parts of the glacier moving at different speeds ) have been detected on the Margherita glaciers making it a high-risk zone for hikers.
UWA is now exploring the option of installing permanent ladders on the right side of the Margherita glacier to make hiking much safer. In the meantime, visitors to Rwenzori Mountains National Park have been encouraged to explore other peaks like Mount Baker, Mount Speke and the Cheptegei peak on the Stanely range as they can all offer breathtaking views and unique experiences is stunning mountain landscapes.
UWA prioritizes the safety and well-being of tourists and is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on the status of hiking on Margherita Peak. For more information about the suspension of hiking on Margherita Peak, visit this UWA twitter link.
